Traveling with Watches: A Collector's Carry-On Guide

Watches were made to travel — that's half the romance. But between airport carousels, hotel safes and the bottom of a weekender bag, a trip is also where most collections pick up their scars. A few rules keep them pristine.

1. Never check them in

The one non-negotiable. Watches ride in the cabin with you, always. A compact case fits any carry-on and never leaves your sight.

2. One case, not three pouches

Loose pouches migrate around a bag and let pieces knock together. A rigid, zip-closed case keeps everything in one place, with each watch on its own cushion — bracelets never touching bezels.

3. Pack it in the middle

Even in a rigid case, position matters: centre of the bag, cushioned by clothing on every side. Not against the shell of the suitcase, not at the top under the zip.

4. Wind down before you fly

Screw down crowns fully and, if a watch has one, make sure the crown sits in its locked position. A crown at half-mast is how moisture and dust get in.

5. At the hotel

The case goes into the room safe as a unit. If the safe is too small — it happens — the zipped case in a locked suitcase beats bare watches in a drawer, every time.

The right size for the trip

A weekend calls for the Trio; a longer stay — or a watch meet — calls for the eight-slot Collector. Either way, the rule is the same: the collection travels together, protected, in one place.
